Decarbonisation and energy transition lead as the most discussed topics in Q1 and Q2 of 2024 (see exhibit 1), highlighting the growing focus on carbon emissions and renewable energy. This reflects the global urgency to address climate change, driven by:

  • The European Commission's announcement of record post-winter gas storage levels due to diversified energy supplies, reduced gas demand, increased renewable investments, and enhanced energy security.
  • Global political discussions on renewables and clean energy investments, notably in the US, Australia, and the UK. US investments may decrease depending on the outcome of the presidential elections.
  • The United Nations chief's call for a global advertising ban on fossil fuel companies.

Trending themes include:

  1. Renewable energy sources
  2. Greenhouse gas mitigation
  3. Clean energy investments
  4. International energy agency
  5. Renewable energy infrastructure

While decarbonisation and energy transition lead in overall discussions, circular economy had the most notable quarterly change. Therefore, the ESG Trend Monitor will further focus on circular economy.

Market discussions on circular economy have experienced the most notable increase compared to last quarter (see exhibit 2). This was mostly driven by two topics:

These topical drivers highlight opportunities and challenges for investors. Opportunities include investing in innovative recycling technologies whilst challenges involve following potential new plastic regulations, requiring compliance and significant changes to business operations.

  • Discussions around harmonising global regulations and policies to combat the plastics crisis. A significant 87% of circular economy discussion focused on the "Strong Global Plastics Treaty" petition, which has gained over 230,000 signatures.
  • The treaty aims to counter the slow response of the private sector and push world leaders by introducing a legally binding agreement.
  • Measures include mandates for recycled content, limits on the production of new (virgin) plastic, investment in waste management infrastructure, and substantial reductions in single-use plastics.

  • Energy companies worldwide are making circular investments, such as improved waste recycling, resource recovery, and land rehabilitation.
  • These companies are attractive investment targets but also face criticism over greenwashing.
  • Regulatory measures, like the EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), aid investors by enhancing transparency and helping to prevent greenwashing.
