Civil-military synergies

Telecommunications sector

In recent years, synergies between the civil and military spheres have become a central element in European defence and security strategies.

Increased defence budgets and new geopolitical challenges are leading to progressive integration between civil and military infrastructure, with a particular focus on the telecommunications sector.

Modern threats, such as cyber attacks, infrastructure sabotage, disinformation campaigns and environmental risks, no longer respect traditional borders. As a result, civil infrastructure, private industry and emerging technologies are now an integral part of defence planning. In this scenario, telecommunications play a key role: secure, resilient and interoperable communications are essential for both military operations and the resilience of civil infrastructure.

Technological evolution, growing dependence on satellite systems and cyber threats require the sector to continuously adapt to meet dual-use (civilian and military) needs. Telecommunications networks must therefore be designed to ensure operational continuity in both ordinary conditions and crisis situations, becoming a pillar of national security and European response capacity.

The integration of defence and telecommunications opens up new market opportunities, but requires investment in innovation, security and collaboration between operators, technology providers and institutions.

Secure and resilient communications are essential for both military operations and the continuity of civil infrastructure, especially in a context of rapid technological change and cyber threats.
