Beyond the assets:

Sweden’s infrastructure renewal is creating a broader private-equity opportunity

Infrastructure is often discussed as an asset class: roads, grids, fibre networks, ports and power generation financed by governments, utilities and infrastructure funds. But this framing captures only part of the opportunity.

For generalist and sector focused private-equity investors, we’ve seen the more actionable opportunity sit one layer away from the assets themselves, in the specialised companies that design, inspect, maintain, upgrade, digitise and protect them.

This is particularly relevant in Sweden. The Nordics already has an extensive and sophisticated infrastructure base, but much of it must now be renewed and adapted to new requirements. Electrification is placing greater demands on the power system. Ageing transport and water assets require maintenance. Digitalisation is making physical infrastructure more complex and interconnected. Climate adaptation, security of supply and defence readiness are moving higher on the agenda.

The result is not simply a wave of major projects. It is a long-duration increase in demand for thousands of recurring, technically demanding services.

"The most compelling opportunity is not in owning Sweden’s infrastructure, but in backing the specialist companies needed to renew it; from grid engineering and water services to digital resilience and defence readiness."
