Julien Hartley


Julien Hartley is an associate director in the Strategy& practice in South Africa. He specialises in operating model design, transformation progamme/project management, and finance function and IT (application) architecture. He has over 32 years of strategy consulting experience in strategic issues and operational improvement. The majority of his experience has been gained in the energy sector (oil, gas and utilities) and working for consumer and industrial product and pharmaceutical companies. Julien has advised clients in South Africa, the UK and Continental Europe.

His recent work includes:

  • Advised a multinational pharmaceutical company (that had SAP as its core ERP platform) on its strategy for planning and optimisation systems across its global supply chain;
  • Led a project to review and improve the planning processes in the secondary supply business of a pharmaceutical company;
  • Led a diagnostic investigation into the supply chain effectiveness of an FMCG company in the UK, which looked specifically at the sales and operational planning processes. He was subsequently retained by the client to lead the design of the operating model for the support functions (including supply chain), as it was transforming its UK operations;
  • Currently leading the service management stream in a project to create a multi-function (including procurement) shared services centre for a South African mining company;
  • Advised one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies on IT procurement category management;v
  • PMO lead for a global procurement transformation project for a brewing company;
  • Led a project to restructure the supply chain for a European lubricants business;
  • Managed a £multi-million business transformation programme for a large oil and gas group;
  • Led a post-merger integration project for an energy company in the North Sea;
  • Led a project to create a new international energy commodity origination and trading business within an energy company;
  • Led a project to develop the target operating model for finance for a large oil and gas utility in the UK;
  • Led a project to develop an IT strategy for the manufacturing operations of a pharmaceutical multinational; and
  • Developed a European shared services strategy for a large lubricants company.
