The purchasing process for mobile phones and U.S. wireless services is commoditizing. Consumer electronics retailers, national discounters, and online-only players present an opportunity and a threat to carriers. Carriers can still shape much of the future wireless ecosystem, but time is running out and swift action is needed to defend against competitors’ attacks on the carriers’ dominance.
