Ultralow cost mobile: Comprehensive cost transformation of a leading Indian operator
The client, one of the lowest-cost operators in the Indian market, engaged Strategy& India to take a fresh look at its entire cost base. It also needed help positioning itself to be able to invest in future requirements, at a time when call rates (already among the world’s lowest) were trending down even further. We established a sustainable and effective framework that enabled continuous cost reduction while not weakening the company in the face of severe market dynamics. As a result, the client identified and committed to an average cost reduction of 12 to 15 percent over the next three years and launched an implementation plan with a dedicated program office sponsored by the CEO.
Cross-border acquisition due diligence and transaction support
The client, a leading integrated telecom operator, engaged Strategy& India to perform due diligence for a cross- border acquisition involving entry into multiple new markets including India. The role of Strategy& India included overseeing the overall acquisition program. We performed commercial, regulatory, and technology due diligence for the acquisition target across three countries and developed the business plans and governance structures. In addition, we developed negotiation strategies (and participated in principal negotiations), oversaw the work of other professional services firms (legal, investment bank, and financial/tax advisor), supported the lobbying and press coverage programs, and developed a post-merger integration program. As a result, the client successfully completed the acquisition with favorable terms and retained Strategy& India to execute the post-merger integration program.
Digitization and smart pipe strategy
The client, a greenfield telecom operator, wanted a thorough understanding of the online content market before formulating its own strategy. It engaged Strategy& India to understand the “digitization” opportunities in each aspect of its target segments — consumer, small to medium-sized business, and enterprise. We developed a comprehensive map of both the global and local landscapes and designed a detailed digitization map of the Indian market for each of the company’s target segments.
