Every year since 2005, Strategy& has conducted the Global Innovation 1000 study, which investigates the relationship between how much companies spend on R&D and what their overall financial performance is — and every year, the study reinforces the conclusion that there is no statistically significant relationship between the two. Over the years, we have expanded the scope of the study to include critical issues such as the importance of customer-driven innovation and how companies managed R&D spending during and after the recession.
Our findings and further analysis of what makes the most successful R&D spenders great led The Economist to call the Global Innovation 1000 study "the most comprehensive assessment of the relationship between R&D investment and corporate performance," and Tom Peters, notable American business management author, praised it as a "provocative, research-based article that is sure to get you thinking."
Since its inception, the study has been mentioned in more than 150 publications in 27 countries, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Handelsblatt, Zawya, and Vedomosti, and was recognized by the Innovate Forum, the Product Development and Management Association, and the National Academies of Sciences & Engineering.
