Dr. Des McNamara


Dr. Des McNamara is a Partner and leads Strategy&, PwC’s strategy consulting business, in Africa and PwC’s Operations Consulting practice in southern Africa. Based in Johannesburg, he has over twenty seven years of experience in oil and gas, industrial products, consumer goods, telecoms and business services across Europe, North America, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. He has supported numerous improvement initiatives, from business-wide transformation to single asset improvement programmes, all focused on ‘hands on’ implementation and the delivery of ‘bottom-line’ results.

  • Post-deal operations performance improvement for numerous manufacturing companies which has included site improvement, footprint optimisation, procurement effectiveness, overheads cost reduction, SKU rationalisation and working capital reduction
  • Post-merger integration of two global chemical businesses, realizing $320 million of synergies within 18 months
  • Strategy development for oil and gas companies in Russia and business transformation for a Kazakh oil and gas business, including the corporate centre, upstream and downstream
  • Operations performance improvement across 40+ manufacturing sites for two global manufacturing businesses in Europe, the US and Canada, Asia and South America
  • Aggressive cash management for a global manufacturing business releasing $400 million of cash within 12 months
  • Carve-out and separation of multiple industrial manufacturing businesses, including assessment of one-off and stand-alone costs and transitional requirements

Des obtained a B.Sc. (Hons.) 1st Class degree and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Nottingham.
