Strategy planning for Chinese vehicle manufacturer

A VM in China wanted to develop a 5-year strategic plan through benchmarking. The client asked the Strategy& team to: 1) suggest how to best close the significant engineering and research and development (ER&D) gaps in order to become one of the top global players; 2) assess future fuel technology trends and develop a long-term fuel technology roadmap; and 3) explore the opportunities in the Chinese auto finance market.

Strategy& assisted the client by assessing their ER&D strategy based on their desired future market position, segment portfolio and associated technology investments, and operating model. The team also benchmarked these criteria against global VMs and their demand for ER&D based on current and future product plans. Finally, the team studied the development paths of mature auto finance markets as well as the leading players to understand key success factors for entering the industry.
