Market and business strategy

We assess a company’s existing position, forecasting future market trends and identifying areas of opportunity and risk.

Our client, a 150 year old USD 1.6 bn Indian business Group, engaged Strategy& India to identify diversification opportunities in the Defence sector, with capabilities of 3 Group companies as an input into the study. Our team brought its wide expertise across tiered value chain in land, naval and air-based defence platforms to identify and qualify attractive options for our client. Our work has led to the creation of a new defence business unit under one of the Group companies to lead the defence foray.


Corporate portfolio strategy

We assess a company’s product or service portfolio through the identification of opportunities, synergies, potential M&A or divestitures, and risks.

A large and established industrial house in India engaged Strategy& to develop a 5-year growth roadmap to expand its existing presence in Indian defence sector. Our team performed the top-down and bottom-up analysis of opportunities in India’s defence market to qualify growth hypotheses adjacent to client’s capabilities. The team developed the overall business case for growth, 5 year implementation roadmap, articulated go-to-market strategy and delta capabilities required for our client to win in the market.


M&A strategy and due diligence

We support strategic buyers and investment institutions with the identification of target acquisitions and the preparation of due diligence assessments of targeted acquisitions.

A large auto components player engaged Strategy& India to scan landscape of Indian A&D companies in India, to search for a worthy acquisition target as a first step towards addressing the company’s long term growth ambition within the Indian defence sector. Our team started with a list of 1200 small and medium sized enterprises, and shortlisted attractive targets for acquisition via a structured filtering process, extensive partner discussions and a clear point-of-view on long term potential of the target companies. Post this, we helped the client in performing due diligence on one of the identified targets.


Shareholder value management

We perform strategic, financial and operational assessment focused on maximizing shareholder value through portfolio strategy and investment assessments, revenue optimization, cost control, and process benchmarking.

We undertook an extensive benchmarking study of 6 defence-focused shipyards commissioned by one of these shipyards. Our team identified sources of process and performance improvements based on international best practices. The team conducted extensive research and interviews with domestic and foreign shipyards (U.S., EU, Korea) to guide the effort. Our recommendations have helped these shipyards to identify areas of significant operational improvements, to build capabilities of the shipbuilding industrial base and to credibly address future needs of the Indian Navy.


International expansion

We provide a comprehensive assessment of international market opportunities through initial market screening, and deep-dive assessments of selected markets/segments.

A U.S.-based technology company addressing advanced military and civil applications engaged Strategy& India to assess the Indian market and develop a go-to-market strategy to create a sustainable business. Our team identified addressable market potential for the company’s product portfolio, building a clear view of the horizon over which the advanced products may be adopted by the various customer segments under study. The team also assessed competition and competing technologies, and articulated a defence strategies against such factors.
