Gary L. Neilson is a Principal based in Strategy&’s Chicago office. He has 30 years of experience with the firm, focused on helping Fortune 500 companies with operating model transformation challenges.
More specifically, he helps clients with organization design, cost restructuring and enterprise-wide transformational programs. He serves clients across all industries including consumer, health, financial services, transportation, industrials, and energy sectors. He has served over 250 companies and public sector institutions during his Strategy& career.
Mr. Neilson spends over 80% of his time serving clients. He leads the global Strategy& team that developed the Org DNA ideas and deploys the related “Organizing for Results” service offering to help companies diagnose and solve the issues associated with ineffective organizations and strategy implementation.
He has published over 50 articles on organization and transformation topics based on his client work. Two recent articles were published by the Harvard Business Review: “The Secrets to Successful Strategy Execution” (2008) and “The passive-aggressive organization” (2005). Harvard Business Review also cited Org DNA on its HBR List of 20 “Breakthrough Ideas for 2005.” In 2005, Random House published the book Results that Mr. Neilson co-authored. The book highlights seven types of organization that companies embrace at different stages of their organizational life.
Mr. Neilson has an MBA in Finance from Columbia, where he received the Wall Street Journal Award for highest academic achievement in Finance. He also holds a B.S. degree from King’s College, where he earned the S. Idris Ley Memorial Award for the Highest Academic Achievement in his graduating class.
When not at clients or on a plane, Mr. Neilson can often be found with his wife and two college aged children. The family centers its summer life on their home in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, where they are active boating, skiing, walking, or just hanging out!
