Integration of engineering centers for a global automotive VM
A global automotive VM wanted to reduce engineering costs by integrating engineering centers that were historically part of independent car companies, located in different countries, and different in size and culture. Cooperation in engineering had been limited to sharing components for one vehicle line, while attempts to share a full platform had been less successful. This resulted in some mistrust between sites.
Strategy& structured the program into a top down definition of overall organization structure and a bottom up integration effort with 20+ integration teams. Our previous experience of working with the client’s engineering organization helped build trust. We blueprinted the combined organization, led the program office, and trained the integration teams in identifying, defining, and driving more than 400 integration initiatives. As a result, the two centers were successfully integrated, leading to immediate cost savings from elimination of duplicate activities and medium-term movement to common platform architecture.
