I recently completed a project where we supported a leading global car manufacturer design an entirely new strategy and business model for its first foray into the low-cost car space. This required one of the most interesting and comprehensive series of analyses I had ever seen conducted, ranging from selection of the appropriate base-model to ensure the retail proposition would be attractive to consumers, detailed operational analysis to isolate key areas where costs could be saved without compromising on key safety and quality attributes, and of course, designing the required operating model that would allow not just the first car to be successfully launched, but a sustainable business introduced. The results of this project will likely be seen in show-rooms across China by the end of 2014.
Not only is Strategy& one of the world’s pre-eminent consulting firms, with the longest history of its peers, but it has managed to achieve this standing while retaining an incredible entrepreneurial spirit. As an example, since starting with the firm six years ago, I have had the flexibility and opportunity to work across over 15 countries and five continents (a dream of mine), tackling problems that have allowed me to build an extremely deep foundation in the selected industries and functions that I have been interested in. Coupled with the firm’s pride in its people, and each offices’ intrinsically ‘Strategy&’ culture – this has made Strategy& a place where I continue to be excited each day I come into work.
One final reason which I find Strategy& such a great place to work, is that the firm actively supports a rich and balanced work-life for its employees. As such, my life ‘outside’ of Strategy& involves me spending time with my wife, hiking in far flung destinations, playing a variety of sports with both Strategy&’ers and non-Strategy&’ers alike, and hosting regular dinner-parties.
