Past studies 2001-2014
Every year, Strategy& takes an intensive look at CEO successions among the world’s top 2,500 public companies. Our research now reaches back to 2000, giving us 15 years of perspective on who’s leaving the chief executive’s chair and who’s coming in.
Since its inception, the study has included analyses by both geography and industry. It has examined major trends with respect to CEO succession over time: how often company insiders take the top job, how often the roles of CEO and chairman of the board are split, and the professional backgrounds of the CEOs companies are hiring.
Our work on CEO succession has been mentioned in 200-plus publications in more than 25 countries, including the Financial Times, the Economist, the Wall Street Journal, Handelsblatt, Les Echos, and CCTV, making Strategy& the foremost authority on governance trends.
